Today Dexter and The Moonrocks, pioneers of “Western Space Grunge,” leaned into their Western roots with a live cover of Tyler Childers’ “Messed Up Kid.”  The cover is streaming here, and a video of the band performing the track live is here.

The Moonrocks’ own “Sad in Carolina” is currently at #4 on the alternative radio chart behind Jack White, Linkin Park and Sum 41.  The song marked the debut radio single from the band’s inaugural EP, “Western Space Grunge,” released earlier this year.

The band is currently on their Eastern Space Grunge trek through December, including  a stop November 16 in Brooklyn at Elsewhere. A full list of dates is included below.

According to Alternative Press, Dexter and The Moonrocks “shorten the distance between grunge, space rock and country.” The band has won over rock and country fans alike, with Raised Rowdy declaring, “‘Western Space Grunge’ is a great collection of heaters with the quality we have grown to expect from the group. The fuzzy, energetic guitars, booming rhythm section and perfect mix of melancholy and angst that Dexter and The Moonrocks have made their own by now is ever present on this EP and better than ever.”

A fry cook, an oil field operator, a concrete surface decorator and a kids’ baseball coach met up in West Texas and morphed a formerly country/western band into a flavor of alt rock only possible from small town Texas. Dexter and The Moonrocks make Western Space Grunge music, and their specific niche of “sad cowboy songs” has struck a nerve: in just two short years, Dexter and The Moonrocks gained more than 50 million streams and 700,000 followers on TikTok.

That rise led to Severance Records, an imprint of Big Loud Rock, naming the band as their inaugural signing.
